Remodel your basement to serve your needs and opportunites

basement conversion

A basement is perhaps one of the most versatile parts of your entire house. It has no fixed purpose but instead can be adapted into a multitude of things such as a recreation room, office, studio, library or a guestroom. It can serve whatever task you deem it worthy for, provided you know how to model it accordingly. Do not let this space go to waste by stacking moldy old boxes in there; it is more than a den.

However, the following points need to be considered thoroughly before you decide to utilize your basement space for anything.

Space

Is the basement roomy enough? Does it have the right dimensions and the proper height needed to convert it into a guestroom or a workplace?

If the basement is too small, you may add extra windows at certain points to make it feel more spacious.

Ventilation system

Basements require special care in this regard as the place can get pretty suffocating without proper airflow, especially if there are heaters or stoves being used in the place.

A proper ventilation system will ensure the escape of any potentially harmful gases from the basement, availability of fresh air to the occupant, and therefore a much more pleasant experience.

Lighting

Artificial lighting has its perks but natural light is usually the preferred option as it makes the place feel open to the world and helps to avoid any feelings of constriction.

Installing large windows and a small courtyard alongside the basement that is open up top will greatly benefit the experience of the occupant.

Obviously. the ceiling should be lined with recessed lights which should be spaced according to the height of the structure. The greater the height, the more should be the space between each fixture.

Apply the same rule with light intensity: measure the square footage of your basement and accordingly set the amount of lumens that are required to light it up.

A dimly lit basement will be highly depressing for your guests but be wary of overkill as well. You want to have the right amount; not extravagant, piercing beams of light that will be a nuisance.

Decor

The place needs to give off a friendly vibe or else it may end up feeling like a dungeon. Set up attractive curtains or drapes for the windows to accentuate the feeling of whatever natural light filters through them. Try wooden window shutters, they might proof an excellent option due to their numerous benefits. If you look for window shutters, you should consider they might be called by some companies as plantation shutters.

Have the place painted or wallpapered with a pleasant color that is appealing but at the same time, not too flashy. A small collection of abstract paintings or artwork will make the room much more interesting.

There are some items which are not exactly necessities but more in line with courtesy provisions and thus should definitely be present such as a television set, preferably mounted on a wall. Set up necessary wall switches for any electronic devices the occupant may wish to charge.

Flooring

The floor is a concern because the basement is generally more humid than the rest of the house and may be susceptible to damp which can result in mold or rot.

It’s advised that you choose your flooring materials with care even if the floor is ultimately going to be carpeted.
